Sherpa Honey was born out of a profound curiosity for one of nature’s most fascinating nectars- mad honey. In 2023, we took an unforgettable journey to mountaintops of the Himalayas in a quest to learn about the legendary Himalayan cliff honey and the culture of the infamous Nepal honey hunters.
What started as a curious adventure soon morphed into a life-altering experience. Shortly upon our arrival, the Nepalese Gurung community welcomed us with open arms and shared the communities’ deep-rooted healing traditions and fascinating history surrounding the honey.
We were enlightened about the healing effects of mad honey, and its integral role in their healing culture. Contrary to our expectations of the honey being solely used as a hallucinogen, we were surprised to learn that the Gurung use mad honey at lower dosages to provide various wellness benefits such as boosting mood, calming restless nerves, boosting mental clarity and even as using it as an aphrodisiac.

In the early hours of the morning, the committed bee hunters from this hardworking Gurung community awake at 4:00 am to make the arduous four-hour-long trek through the dense subtropical forests to reach the legendary mad honey hives of the Himalayas.
These adventurous bee hunters scale the perilous rock faces on bamboo ladders, a practice that follows in their ancestors’ footsteps, to reach mad honey hives sometimes up over 100 feet high on the cliffsides. When we saw it, we could barely believe our eyes as we watched the Gurung bee hunters hardly batting an eye as they scaled the cliffs in pursuit of their beloved nectar.
The Gurung participate in this daunting practice due to their deep belief in the healing and wellness properties of the mad honey. The harvesting is a practice woven into their culture and for them, the effort is worth every ounce.
